Richtersveld Transfrontier Wildrun® 2016 Day 1

Richtersveld Transfrontier Wildrun® 2016 Day 1

‘Welcome to the Richtersveld Transfrontier Wildrun® 2016’ is how runners were greeted as they arrived in Sendelingsdrift yesterday. Runners registered between 4 – 6pm which was extended as the last bus of Runners arrived late from Ai Ais in Namibia but we managed to get everyone across the border and into Sendelingsdrift. We kicked off the evening with a GPS briefing and then a full runners briefing. During the runners briefing we had a wonderful traditional dance by a few of the local Nama’s that had everyone clapping along and jiggling in their seats.

Magda and her team then blessed us with a delicious Lasagne and completely spoilt us with a Chocolate fountain and waffles! After some lively chatter and getting to know each other the runners headed off to bed.

Up at the crack of dawn for some porridge or bacon and eggs and then off to the start line. With a hop, skip and a jump the runners were off.

The runners had to pass through 4 checkpoints today. 3 Radio Control Points (RCP’s) and 1 Aid Station Control Point (ACP) and were warned that if they didn’t pass through the check point and if they approached from the wrong direction there would be a 1 hour time penalty.

The weather has played along beautifully today, with the sun shining brightly and not too much in it really has been a stunning day! The view from the mountain tops is unrivalled and the landscapes here are simply breath taking.

The only thing left to tell everyone is who won, in first place in the Women’s category for Day 1 of the Richtersveld Transfrontier Wildrun® 2016 we have Jo Williams and in first place in the Men’s category for Day 1 of the Richtersveld Transfrontier Wildrun® 2016 we have Tobias Mews and Stephen Cunliffe.

Looking forward to another amazing dinner and then some good sleep after a long day of running.
